Apple Horse Farm

Welcome to Apple Horse Farm

Apple Horse Farm is a sustainable cattle and pig farm, implementing holistic management practices to raise pastured pork and grass-fed, grass-finished beef. Our mission is to provide accessible, sustainable meat to individuals and businesses of the Alleghany Highlands.

About Us

Developed over the last half century by the present owners, the property is comprised of four farms and several smaller tracts, now under one continuous boundary extending across the width of the scenic Falling Springs Valley. The land has been developed to be a sustainable livestock producing enterprise, while simultaneously cultivating the natural beauty and preserving the integrity of the land. The idyllic setting includes four mountain springs, providing gravity fed water to all barns and houses, two ponds for livestock, and miles of trails winding through lush forests and open pasture home to an abundance of diverse wildlife.

The Owners – Dabney & Laura

Long-term residents of Bath County that have developed this farm from its initial 25 acres. They have always had a passion for animals and agriculture and enjoy preserving the beauty of the land.  Dabney and Laura have enjoyed the land with their numerous children and grandchildren over the past 50 years, along with their farm dogs, Annie, Abby, Red, and Cub. They welcome you to enjoy the farm and surrounding area as much as they have.

The Farm Manager & Owner of AHF Meats – Saul

Saul is a recent graduate of the University of Virginia, where he majored in environment and sustainability. After graduating, Saul gained experience on a sustainable farm in Charlottesville, Virginia. A native of Bath County, he returned to AHF in the summer of 2019 to expand the sustainable practices already in place. Saul implemented multiple agriculture practices to bring sustainable meats to the area and ultimately hopes to emulate other carbon negative regenerative farms to produce healthy and ethical products. Farming is Saul’s passion, and he is more than happy to discuss the details of his methods or provide any information you may want about the farm.

AirBnb Manager & Farmer – Gwen

Gwen graduated from James Madison University in 2018, where she majored in Hospitality Management and Business. After graduation she worked at a major winery in the Charlottesville area, first as an intern then working her way to Cellar Master. She loved being outdoors, the process of turning grapes into wine, and tasting and tweaking the finished product. In 2020, Gwen returned to her hometown of Bath County to join Saul on the farm. Together, they raise their herds of cows and pigs to provide sustainable meats to the area. Gwen is also the manager of Farm’s Edge Cabin, the Airbnb on property. She hopes the cabin can be a place of relaxation, restoration, and happy memories for anyone who comes to stay. If you have any questions about a stay on the farm or during your stay don’t hesitate to ask.
